Gressa Timalsina Empowerment Story
It was a dream come true for Gressa Timalsina when she immigrated with her husband to the US in 2004. It was a long shot, but he won the diversity immigrant lottery. She grew up in a loving middle class household in Nepal where top grades in school were extremely important.
When growing up she was always comparing herself to her younger brother and sister who were exceptionally smart, and she often felt like a disappointment to her overbearing father. In Nepal it is believed that if you are not competent in math you will not be successful, and since math was not “her thing”, Gressa constantly felt less than, and not “good enough”. Each time she had to share her school grades with her father, she felt a sharp pain in her heart due to the disappointment of not measuring up to her siblings. This feeling of not measuring up created an inherent sense of self doubt which echoed throughout her life. She felt the most safe when she held herself back, and didn’t speak up. It was difficult for her to make friends.
In the Spring of 2016, Lynn Kirkham, co-founder of The Inspired Heart Foundation, walked into the beauty salon where Gressa worked as a part time employee threading eyebrows for $8 an hour. When Lynn shared about the work she does–empowering women to become strong leaders — Gressa’s eyes lit up as big as saucers. As she looked down she timidly replied, “I could only dream of participating in a class like that.”
Gressa was able to take part in The Inspired Heart’s Empowerment Training that same summer and has never looked back! She began with a goal to leave her job that did not value nor respect her, and to start her very own business. She had no idea how long it would take, yet she was determined to do whatever was necessary to make it happen. In just three short months in the fall of 2016 Gressa found the strength to stand up for her herself and quit her job. The courage it took for her to do this was life-altering. She credits the ability to take the step to improve her life to The Inspired Heart’s Empowerment & Leadership Training Program. After leaving her job, within a mere two months she was able to successfully open her own business, “Threading and Skincare by Gressa” in downtown San Carlos. Gressa’s story is exceptional, but not surprising. This is what’s possible when we seek and find the inner wisdom and courage to follow our dreams.
“Before coming to The Inspired Heart Foundation’s program I could not speak up for myself and I allowed my boss to take advantage of me. I was afraid to talk with my clients because I didn’t want to say anything wrong. Now I am confident in who I am and what I do. No one is going to tell me what I can and cannot do ever again. I feel strong, confident and capable of creating anything I desire now. I am empowered.
The Inspired Heart Foundation’s program has been a life-changing experience for me and my family. For the first time in my life, I believe in myself and I use the tools I learned every day to help me be a better business owner, wife and mother. I have stopped our family conditioning of children not feeling valued or good enough. The tools have helped my two daughters believe in themselves and they feel excited about who they are and what they are capable of.”
